secondary schools in greatly increased size; each will provide for 1,000 students. The political need of strengthening English studies noted below in paragraph 41 is equally applicable as a need for strengthening courses in the methods of teaching and their application.

This Department has not been functioning since before the war, and its strength was then one Professor and one full-time Lecturer.

Present political conditions in China make the extension of English studies of paramount importance. The Institution of Honours courses will also fill a large local need for Honours graduates. In the development of Honours courses in English, it is essential to keep abreast of modern developments in the field of linguistics, and the increase in numbers of students has created a dire need for additional assistance in the form of part-time Tutors.

It is recommended that the following additional staff be sanctioned, appointment to be made by the dates shown:

It has been proposed to offer post-graduate courses in Far Eastern Studies, but as the scheme has not yet been formulated no recommendation can be made at this juncture.

DEPARTMENT OF GEO GRAPHY

The present part-time arrangements are totally unsatisfactory. Full-time appointments are essential to develop full degree courses in Geography, with the possibility of future extension to Honours courses. Within the department, one member should have specialist qualifications in Geology, and preferably in Engineering Geology so that he may combine with his post within the department instruction in the Faculty of Engineering.

It is recommended that the present part-time arrangement be abandoned, and the following full-time posts created, appointment to be made by the dates shown:
